In the world of interior design, a mood board is one of the most powerful tools to visualize and communicate your vision. Whether you’re an interior design student or a seasoned professional, understanding the key rules for creating a mood board is essential to any project’s success. Here are some important rules to follow when crafting your interior design mood board:

Define the Project’s Purpose and Style

Before you start gathering images, define the purpose of the space and the design style you're aiming for. Ask yourself questions like: What is the intended mood—modern, rustic, eclectic, or minimalist? Are there any concept words that resonate with the project? This clarity will guide you in selecting cohesive elements for your mood board.

Set a Color Palette

Color sets the tone for a space. Once you’ve identified the overall style, the next step is to define a color palette. Aim for a harmonious combination of a maximum of 5 colors, including neutrals and accent shades. TIP: this is a great chance to use color theory which will help you in building your concept

Incorporate Textures and Materials

While mood boards are often visually focused, it’s important to include tactile elements like fabrics, woods, metals, and other materials. These materials define how the space will "feel" in real life, adding dimension to the mood board. So, include actual fabric swatches or photos of the materials you plan to use (velvet, marble, leather, etc.).

EXTRA TIP!!!

A mood board should have structure, even if it's an abstract concept. Group related images, colors, and textures together to create a sense of order. This will allow the board to tell a cohesive story and make it easy for your audience to follow your design vision. Use balance and symmetry when arranging your elements. Place dominant, larger images at the center, with smaller, supporting elements around them. This will draw attention to the most important parts of the design.

Creating an impactful mood board is an art form in itself. By following these key rules, you'll be able to craft a visually stunning and cohesive mood board that clearly communicates your design vision and resonates emotionally with your audience.

Such a great tip to get actual fabric swatches and samples. You would be surprised how many products I've loved online, but turned out completely different when I got the sample!
