As an international student, I've always felt deeply connected to my roots in Peru. This semester, I’ve decided to focus my thesis project on something incredibly personal and important to me—a multipurpose theater. Theater has always been a form of expression that resonates with me. So, it only makes sense to pour my passion into a project that defines me and aims to make a real impact on a place I hold dear. I lived in Peru for almost 18 years, and it’s heartbreaking to see the current state of theater in the country.

Recently, theater in Peru suffered a significant setback when a congressman decided to stop all theatrical performances, arguing that the low income generated was not sustainable given the investment made. This decision was particularly difficult for me to accept, as it not only suppresses artistic expression but also fails to recognize the potential of theater to enhance Peruvian culture and the economy. In response to this, I felt compelled to focus my frustrations and aspirations on my thesis.
My project is more than just a building—it's a vision. I want to revive the theater scene in Peru by designing a space that brings together both culture and commerce. This multipurpose theater will be a hub for cultural exchange and creativity, and I believe it can also help boost economic growth by encouraging local and international audiences to engage with Peruvian art. It's my way of not just contributing to the design world but also giving back to the country that shaped me. Through this project, I hope to inspire a cultural and economic revival that benefits Peru and its rich artistic history.

As a theater kid myself, this is what I'm talking about!!! Open the theater 🗣🗣
I’m excited to see how your thesis comes out! To be able to design a theater, which is so near and dear to your heart, and to be able to have a cultural connection as well, is a connection many people strive to have with their designs. Not only will this thesis inspire you, but also those who are unfamiliar with Peru, like me, and its culture and theater life.
